The most common causes of unexpected sudden cardiac death sometimes referred to as SADS in the young
(under 35)
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) Symptoms and severity can vary from person to person. They may
begin in infancy, childhood or in middle or elderly life. Some patients never have any symptoms of
HCM and the disease can cause unexpected sudden death during or after excessive exertion.
The reason for the onset of symptoms is not known and no particular symptom or complaint is unique
to HCM sufferers. Many do not even realise that they have the disease and it is not until a member
of the family presents that other family members are screened and are found to have the condition.
As it is a hereditary condition if a parent presents then there is a 50% chance that each child will
also have the disease.
The most common symptoms of HCM are:
Shortness of breath
Chest pains (usually brought on by physical exertion)
Palpitations (rapid, irregular heart beat)
Light-headedness, blackouts
If you suffer from any of these symptoms it does not mean that you necessarily have HCM but if you
visit your General Practitioner he/she may suggest that you undertake some tests any may refer you
to a cardiologist (a heart specialist).
Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC)
Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM)
Restrictive Cardiomyopathy (RCM)
Myocarditis
Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)
Ion Channelopathies - Long QT (inc. Jervell and Lange-Nielsen Sydrome & Romano-Ward syndrome),
Brugada, Lev-Lenegre's Syndrome)
Wolff (Wolfe) Parkinson White Syndrome (WPW)
Coronary Artery Anomalies (CAAs)
Marfan Syndrome
Other Cardiac Conditions -
Endocardial Fibroelastosis (EFE), Tachycardia, Antibiotic Prophylaxis, Churg-Strauss Syndrome, Right
Bundle Branch Block (RBBB), Kawasaki Disease

I lost my beautiful 19 year old son to SADS on 25th August 2008. He woke up and just died. Post mortems were inconclusive so his heart was sent to the Royal Bromton, still inconclusive - possibly channelopathy. We need to be tested now.
The pain is unbearable, having no reason makes no sense. Someone recently said that the angels had just come and taken him.
If you go to Jase's page you will see the kind, generous, special person he was. The world is a much sadder place without him.
My friend Matthew is running this year's London Marathon in Jase's name to raise money for CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) and also to raise awareness how many young people die this way. You can visit his page at

Gob Bless Jase, sleep well. xx
I lost my beautiful daughter to SADS in 2001 we have been tested and found to have LONG QT syndrome my eldest daughter her daughter and most lightly my greatgrandaughter and my self WHY couldnt it have been me ??? my girl has 2 beautiful sons who miss her so much they thank god do not have the gene. The worst thing about this awful thing is that I will never be 100% sure this is the reason my girl passed away as they could not get enough DNA as so much time had passed (5 years)by the time the test could be done after death It may be 99% that is why she passed but I need 100% answers as to ????????????

Forever, your eyes will hold these memories
Forever, I want there to be a place for me in your heart
Forever, I won’t be able to hold you
Forever, these skies will hold the tears I cried
Forever, I’ll always love you although you may be gone
Forever, I’ll cry for the pain that has been brought onto me
Forever, death will embrace you
Forever, love will embrace me and you.
